How to Choose the Right Small Dog Fence

Choosing the right small dog fence can feel overwhelming with so many options available. But don’t worry, we’ll break it down into simple factors to consider:

Dog Size

First, consider your dog’s size. Smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas or Pomeranians, need fences that are lower to the ground to prevent escapes. For larger small breeds, like French Bulldogs, you might need a bit more height.

Jumping Ability

Some small dogs are surprisingly good jumpers. If your dog is one of them, choose a fence that is at least 4 feet high. According to Pet Playgrounds, dogs’ jumping capabilities can vary greatly, so always err on the side of caution.

Yard Layout

Your yard’s layout plays a big role. If your yard has multiple turns or specific side lengths, you might need additional posts or customized fencing sections. Pet Playgrounds suggests using their guidelines to determine the total number of posts needed for your layout.

Local Regulations

Always check your local regulations before installing a fence. Some areas have rules about fence height, material, and placement. Ignoring these could lead to fines or the need to redo your fence.

Material and Durability

For small dogs, materials like poly or welded wire are often sufficient. If your dog is a chewer, opt for stronger materials like PVC-coated welded wire. Pet Playgrounds offers various materials, including durable poly and steel hex options that withstand the elements.

Installation

Consider the ease of installation. DIY options from Pet Playgrounds come with all necessary materials and detailed instructions, making the process straightforward even for beginners. If you’re not handy, you might want a simpler option or professional installation.

Budget

Lastly, think about your budget. While some fences are more affordable, others offer greater durability and features. For example, the Pet Playgrounds Basic Kit is cost-effective and easy to install, making it a great budget option.

By considering these factors, you can choose the perfect small dog fence to keep your furry friend safe and contained.

Installation Tips for Small Dog Fences

Tools Needed

Before you start installing your small dog fence, gather the following tools:

  • Measuring tape: To measure your yard and fence sections.
  • Post hole digger or auger: For digging holes for fence posts.
  • Level: To ensure posts are straight.
  • Hammer or mallet: For securing fence panels.
  • Wire cutters: If you’re using wire fencing.
  • Zip ties: For attaching wire mesh to posts.
  • Screwdriver or drill: For attaching hardware and fasteners.
  • Shovel: For backfilling holes.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Plan Your Layout:
  2. Measure your yard and mark the fence line with stakes and string.
  3. Decide on gate placements and any turns in the fence line.

  4. Prepare the Ground:

  5. Clear any debris or obstacles from the fence line.
  6. Ensure the ground is level to make installation easier.

  7. Install Posts:

  8. Dig holes for the posts using a post hole digger or auger. Holes should be about one-third the height of the post.
  9. Place posts in holes and use a level to ensure they are straight.
  10. Backfill holes with soil or concrete to secure posts.

  11. Attach Fence Panels or Mesh:

  12. For wire or poly mesh fences, attach the mesh to the posts using zip ties or fasteners.
  13. For wooden or vinyl fences, attach panels to the posts with screws or nails.

  14. Install Gates:

  15. Attach gate hardware to posts and hang the gate.
  16. Ensure the gate swings freely and latches securely.

  17. Secure the Bottom:

  18. To prevent digging, lay a section of mesh fencing flat on the ground along the fence line and cover it with gravel or soil.

Common Obstacles

Uneven Ground:
– If your yard is not level, you may need to adjust the height of the fence panels or posts.
– Use longer posts for areas with significant slopes.

Rocky Soil:
– Digging post holes in rocky soil can be challenging. Use a heavy-duty post hole digger or consider renting an auger.

Tree Roots:
– If you encounter tree roots, you may need to adjust the fence line or carefully cut through smaller roots.

Maintenance Tips

Regular Inspections:
– Check the fence regularly for any damage or loose sections.
– Ensure posts remain sturdy and straight.

Cleaning:
– Clean the fence periodically to remove dirt and debris.
– For metal fences, check for rust and apply a rust-resistant coating if needed.

Repairs:
– Fix any damage immediately to prevent further issues.
– Replace or reinforce damaged sections as necessary.

By following these installation tips, you can ensure your small dog fence is set up correctly and will provide a safe and secure area for your furry friend.

Next, we’ll address some Frequently Asked Questions about Small Dog Fences, helping you make informed decisions about your fencing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Small Dog Fences

What is the best fence for tiny dogs?

For tiny dogs, the best fence is one that offers security and durability without gaps they can squeeze through. Chain link fences are a popular choice because they are sturdy and have small enough holes to prevent escapes. However, wooden privacy fences are also excellent since they provide a solid barrier without gaps, ensuring your tiny dog stays safe inside.

How high should a fence be for a small dog?

A four-foot fence is usually sufficient for most small dogs. This height is adequate to prevent them from jumping over. However, if your dog is particularly agile or a known escape artist, you might want to consider a six-foot fence for added security. Always check your local regulations as some areas may have specific requirements for fence heights.

Is a 5-foot fence enough for a dog?

A five-foot fence generally provides a good balance for containing both small and medium-sized dogs. It is high enough to deter most dogs from jumping over, especially those with moderate energy levels. For highly energetic dogs, a six-foot fence might offer better containment. Always consider your dog’s energy levels and jumping ability when deciding on the appropriate fence height.

Pet Playgrounds fencing system is genius! They “think like a dog” and have covered every escape angle a dog can try. Can’t climb out, can’t jump out, can’t rip the fence, can’t dig out. Our fence goes up and down hill and over rock walls. Still safely containing our dogs after almost 10 years.

We have two smart dogs that take advantage of anything to escape. Climbing on stuff we put near the edges, climbing the fence itself when that wouldn’t work, chewing through it even if it would give them splinters, and more.
