Real Dog Fences – 15+ Years of Engineering – DIY Kits & Pro Install – 4 Levels of Security – Low Visibility

The Best Fences to Keep Your Dog Safe and Secure

Introduction

Choosing the best fence for dogs is crucial to ensure the safety, security, and outdoor freedom of your furry friend. A reliable dog fence not only keeps your pet secure but also provides peace of mind, knowing they are safe from potential hazards.

Here are some of the best options for dog fences:

    t

  • Residential-Grade Aluminum Fence: Strong, chew-resistant, and stylish.
  • Vinyl Fence: Durable, low-maintenance, and secure.
  • Wooden Fence: Offers privacy but requires regular maintenance.
  • Chain Link Fence: Weather-resistant but can be climbed by agile dogs.
  • Invisible Fence: Less effective for highly energetic dogs.

Creating a secure outdoor space allows your dog to release energy, which helps keep them calm indoors. A well-secured fence prevents your dog from escaping and keeps unwanted animals out. It’s about providing a balance between safety and the freedom to enjoy the great outdoors.

Why Dogs Try to Escape

Dogs are known for their loyalty and companionship, but some can be quite the escape artists. Understanding why dogs try to escape is crucial to keeping them safe and secure.

Escape Artists

Dogs can be surprisingly adept at finding ways to escape. Whether they’re climbing, digging, or even opening gates, their escape tactics can be impressive. Without a secure fence, your furry friend could be at risk of getting lost or injured.

Dog Behavior and Motivations

Why do dogs try to escape? The reasons can vary widely:

  • Loneliness: Some dogs escape because they feel lonely. They might prefer to be indoors with you rather than outside alone.
  • Enrichment: Dogs often look for outside enrichment. They might see or smell something interesting—like another dog or a rabbit—and decide to chase after it.
  • Excess Energy: Dogs with a lot of pent-up energy are more likely to try to escape. They need a way to burn off that energy, and a secure outdoor space can help.

Loneliness and Enrichment

Dogs are social animals. If they feel isolated, they may try to find companionship outside the yard. Providing indoor time can reduce their urge to escape.

Enrichment is also essential. Dogs that are bored are more likely to try to escape. Make sure they have plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained.

“A lonely dog is more likely to seek outside stimulation, which often leads to escape attempts.” – Pet Playgrounds

Addressing the Issue

To prevent your dog from becoming an escape artist, it’s crucial to understand their behavior and motivations. Spend time with your dog and provide both physical and mental stimulation.

When planning a new dog fence, consider your dog’s specific needs and behaviors. This will help you choose the best fence for dogs that keeps them safe and secure.

Next, we’ll discuss how dogs escape and the types of fences that can help prevent these escape attempts.

How Dogs Escape

Dogs are clever escape artists. Understanding how they get out can help you choose the right fence. Here’s a look at common escape methods:

Climbing

Many dogs use fences as ladders. Chain link fences are especially easy to climb because dogs can place their paws in the mesh. Even wooden fences with horizontal slats can be scaled by agile dogs.

Tip: Choose a fence without horizontal supports or mesh that dogs can climb.

Digging

Some dogs love to dig, and they can tunnel under fences quickly. Chain link fences are flexible, making it easier for dogs to dig and squeeze out.

Tip: Consider a fence with a solid bottom or add a barrier like concrete or buried wire to prevent digging.

Chewing

Certain dogs chew through fences, especially wooden ones. This can lead to costly repairs and potential injuries.

Tip: Use chew-proof materials like high-grade vinyl or aluminum. These materials are tasteless and durable.

Jumping

Some dogs are high jumpers and can leap over moderately high fences. A determined dog can clear a fence if it’s not tall enough.

Tip: Ensure your fence is high enough to prevent jumping. For most dogs, a fence at least six feet tall is recommended.

Gate-Opening

Intelligent dogs can learn to open gates if the latch is simple. This can be a significant escape risk.

Tip: Use a lockable latch, like the D&D Technologies LokkLatch Deluxe, which offers extra security.

By addressing these escape methods, you can create a safer environment for your furry friend.

Next, we’ll look at the different types of dog fences and their pros and cons.

Types of Dog Fences

Choosing the best fence for dogs can be overwhelming with so many options. Each type of fence has its pros and cons, depending on your dog’s behavior and your needs. Let’s break down the most common types of dog fences offered by Pet Playgrounds:

Chain Link Fence

Chain link fences consist of metal posts and wire mesh. They are weather-resistant and can last a long time.

Pros:
– Durable and long-lasting.
– Relatively low maintenance.

Cons:
– Dogs can climb them easily.
– Offers little to no privacy.

Wooden Fence

Wooden fences are made of tall slat boards, often around six feet high, providing good privacy.

Pros:
– Excellent privacy.
– Visually appealing.

Cons:
– Requires regular maintenance to prevent rotting.
– Some dogs may chew through them.

Vinyl Fence

Vinyl fences also use vertical pickets and horizontal bars but are made from durable plastic.

Pros:
– Low maintenance; no painting or staining required.
– Durable and long-lasting.

Cons:
– Some homeowners dislike the plastic appearance.

Each type of fence has its unique benefits and drawbacks. The key is to match the fence type with your dog’s behavior and your specific needs. Next, we’ll explore the best fence options for different types of dogs.

Best Fence for Different Dog Types

Choosing the best fence for dogs depends on your dog’s specific behavior and needs. Let’s break down the best options for various types of dogs, all available through Pet Playgrounds.

For Small Dogs

For small dogs, consider vinyl or aluminum fences offered by Pet Playgrounds. They have smaller gaps and are harder to climb, keeping your tiny friend safe and secure.

For Jumpers

For dogs that love to jump, height and strength are crucial. High-quality vinyl or aluminum fences provided by Pet Playgrounds are your best bet.

  • Vinyl Fences: Durable and tall, offering a strong barrier.
  • Aluminum Fences: Also tall and very strong, with the added benefit of being stylish.

For Diggers

Digging dogs can be a real challenge. An aluminum fence installed low to the ground is ideal. Look for designs where the bottom rail is at the very bottom of the pickets to deter digging.

For Gate-Openers

Some dogs are smart enough to figure out how to open gates. To prevent this, use a swinging gate that opens toward the dog. This way, if they jump on it, they push it closed.

Also, make sure the gate latch is lockable. The D&D Technologies LokkLatch Deluxe is an excellent choice. It offers magnetic latching action and locks from both sides.

For Chewers

Dogs that chew through fences need a tough, tasteless material. Vinyl and aluminum fences are perfect because they are durable and unappealing to chew.

For Patrollers and Friend-Finders

Dogs that patrol the fence line need a solid, tall fence with no gaps. The New Lexington privacy fence is a great option. It’s tall enough to prevent jumping and solid to block the view of passers-by.

By matching the fence type to your dog’s behavior, you can keep your furry friend safe and secure. Next, let’s discuss the installation options for these fences.

Installation of Dog Fences

Once you’ve chosen the right fence for your dog, the next step is installation. The layout of your fence can make a big difference in your dog’s safety and your yard’s functionality. Here are some common installation layouts:

Perimeter Loop

A perimeter loop fence encloses your entire property, including the front yard. This layout gives your dog the most space to roam and explore. However, check local regulations, as some neighborhoods have restrictions on front yard fencing. This setup is ideal for dogs who need a lot of space and for owners who want a uniform look around their property.

Hourglass

The hourglass layout involves two separate fenced areas: one for the front yard and one for the backyard. This option is useful if you want different fence styles or heights for the front and back of your home. For example, you might choose a decorative fence for the front yard to comply with neighborhood aesthetics and a more secure, higher fence for the backyard. This setup can also help manage dogs who have different needs in different areas of the yard.

One Zone

As the name suggests, a one zone fence encloses a single area, typically the backyard. This is the most common choice for dog owners. It provides a secure space for your dog to play without the need to fence the entire property. This layout is especially useful for smaller yards or for owners who want to keep part of their yard dog-free.

Landscape Loops

Landscape loops are smaller, additional fences that surround specific features in your yard, like a pool or garden. These are perfect for keeping dogs out of areas where they could get into trouble or cause damage. For example, a landscape loop around a garden can prevent your dog from digging up plants, while a loop around a pool can keep them safe from water hazards.

By carefully planning the layout of your fence, you can create a safe and enjoyable space for your dog. Next, we’ll look at why residential-grade aluminum fences are often the best choice for most dogs.

Best Fence for Dogs: Residential-Grade Aluminum Fence

When it comes to keeping your dog safe and secure, residential-grade aluminum fences are a top choice. Let’s break down why they stand out.

Security and Protection

Residential-grade aluminum fences offer excellent security. These fences are made from thick, strong aluminum that can withstand dog chewing and harsh weather conditions. Unlike wood, which can rot and be chewed through, aluminum remains intact and durable. This makes it ideal for ensuring your dog stays within the yard and unwanted animals stay out.

Style and Appearance

Aluminum fences are not just functional; they are stylish too. They come in various designs and colors, allowing you to choose one that complements your home’s aesthetic. Whether you prefer a classic look or something more modern, there’s an aluminum fence style to match your taste.

Powder Coating for Durability

One of the key features of residential-grade aluminum fences is the powder coating. This special coating helps keep moisture away, preventing oxidation and rust. It ensures that your fence remains in top condition for years, requiring minimal maintenance. Plus, the coating adds an extra layer of protection against the elements, making the fence even more durable.

Complementary Colors

These fences come in a variety of complementary colors. Whether you want a fence that blends in or one that stands out, you have plenty of options. The colors are not just for looks; they also help in maintaining the fence’s appearance over time, as the powder coating resists fading and chipping.

Matching Gates

To complete the look, you can get matching gates in single entry or double drive styles. These gates are designed to match the six standard fence styles, ensuring a cohesive appearance. They also come with lockable latches, like the D&D Technologies LokkLatch Deluxe, which adds an extra layer of security to keep even the smartest dogs from escaping.

In summary, residential-grade aluminum fences provide the perfect blend of security, protection, style, and durability. They are an excellent choice for any dog owner looking to keep their furry friend safe and their yard looking great. Next, let’s dive into some frequently asked questions about dog fences.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dog Fences

What Type of Fencing Is Best for Dogs?

The best fence for dogs often depends on the dog’s behavior and needs. However, a residential-grade aluminum fence is highly recommended.

Why? It’s weather-resistant and can withstand various climates without rusting or deteriorating. Plus, it’s chew-proof, which is crucial for dogs that love to gnaw on things. The aluminum is thick and strong, making it durable against both weather and dog chewing.

What Is a Good Size Fenced Area for a Dog?

Ideally, you should fence in your entire backyard to give your dog ample room to roam and explore.

If that’s not feasible, providing an area that’s at least 10 feet wide is suggested. This size gives your dog enough space to play, run, and release energy. The more space your dog has, the happier and healthier they’ll be.

How Can I Keep My Dog in the Yard Without a Fence?

If installing a physical fence isn’t an option due to zoning laws, landlord restrictions, or HOA covenants, there are alternatives:

  • Cords and Trolly Runners: These allow your dog some freedom to move around while keeping them secure.
  • Invisible Fences: These work with a transmitter collar to create a boundary that your dog learns not to cross.
  • Pens: Enclosed exercise pens can provide a safe area for your dog to play off-leash.

Each option has its pros and cons, so consider your dog’s behavior and your specific needs when choosing the best solution.

Pet Playgrounds fencing system is genius! They “think like a dog” and have covered every escape angle a dog can try. Can’t climb out, can’t jump out, can’t rip the fence, can’t dig out. Our fence goes up and down hill and over rock walls. Still safely containing our dogs after almost 10 years.

Overall very happy with this fence as an investment. I ordered a 5 foot tall, 600 linear feet fence kit for my large yard. It doesn’t obstruct our creek-view at all, so we love that! We were able to use two trees in the yard as posts (see photos).

We compared Pet Playground fences to other options. A local fence contractor wanted a bit more than twice as much $ compared to Pet Playground, and it was for just a 4-foot fence. We purchased 300 feet of 6 foot fencing, including 2 gates and installation of the whole thing.

My Pet Playgrounds fence is amazing! I have a dog that chews and my second dog is 125 pounds. This is the only fence that can hold them.
