Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Climb Resistant Dog Fence

Why a Climb Resistant Dog Fence is Crucial

Climb-resistant dog fences are essential tools for dog owners who face the challenge of keeping their pets safe and contained within their yards. Here’s the quick answer: Pet Playgrounds Non-Electric Dog Fences offer the best solution by being durable, humane, and effective at preventing both climbing for dogs and predators from the outside, without obstructing your yard’s view. Here’s why they are better than other options:

  • Safe and humane: Unlike electric fences, they don’t harm your dog and offer great coyote protection
  • Highly effective: Proven to be 98% effective against escapes.
  • Durable and affordable: Designed to last without breaking the bank.
  • Easy installation: DIY kits available.
  • Fences are tough to climb due to top rail being steel cabled and having movement

A secure fence doesn’t just keep your dog in—it also keeps predators out. With reports of coyote attacks on the rise, having a reliable Non electric dog  fence is more important than ever.

I’m Jason Levine, NREMT, and I’m here to guide you. With expertise in non-electric dog fences, I’ve seen how effective our solutions can be in keeping even the most escape-prone dogs safe and secure.

Understanding the Need for a Climb-Resistant Dog Fence

Dogs are natural escape artists. Whether driven by curiosity, loneliness, or the sight of another animal, many dogs will attempt to climb over fences to explore the outside world. This behavior can pose serious safety concerns for both the dog and its owners.

Climbing Dogs: The Escape Artists

Dogs, especially athletic breeds, can be quite adept at scaling fences. While dogs aren’t strong climbers like cats, they can use a combination of jumping and kicking off surfaces to gain height. For example, a determined dog might jump up and kick off the horizontal supports of a wood privacy fence to get over it.

Escape Prevention: Why It’s Important

Preventing your dog from escaping isn’t just about keeping them in the yard—it’s about ensuring their safety. A dog that escapes can get lost, injured, or even stolen. Additionally, they might encounter dangerous wildlife or traffic, leading to potentially fatal accidents.

“A secure fence doesn’t just keep your dog in—it also keeps predators out,” says Pet Playgrounds. With reports of coyote attacks on the rise, having a reliable fence is more important than ever.

Safety Concerns: Risks of Traditional Fencing

Traditional fences like chain-link and wood privacy fences often fail to contain determined dogs. Chain-link fences, for example, can be easily climbed by agile dogs, while wood privacy fences with horizontal supports facing inwards can act as a ladder for them.

Key safety concerns include:

  • Injury Risks: Dogs can get their paws or legs stuck in chain-link fences, leading to broken limbs.
  • Escape Risks: Once a dog learns how to escape, they are likely to repeat the behavior.
  • Predator Risks: Escaped dogs are vulnerable to predators like coyotes and foxes.

To address these issues, Pet Playgrounds Non-Electric Dog Fences offer a superior solution. These fences are designed to be climb-resistant, safe, and humane, ensuring your pet’s safety without obstructing your yard’s view.

Next, we’ll explore the top climb-resistant dog fence solutions available.

2. Why Other Options Fall Short

While there are several alternatives to consider, they often come with significant drawbacks that make them less ideal compared to Pet Playgrounds’ non-electric dog fence.

DIY Fence Crown

A DIY fence crown involves adding a big plastic pipe to the top of a chain-link fence, similar to what’s seen in city parks and baseball fields.

Cons:

  • Injury Risk: Dogs can still get their paws or legs stuck in the chain-link, leading to potential injuries.
  • Effectiveness: May not be as effective as other solutions, especially for determined climbers.

Coyote Rollers

Coyote rollers are horizontal bars that spin when a dog tries to climb over the fence. They are designed to prevent both dogs and coyotes from getting a grip on the top of the fence.

Cons:

  • Cost: Can be expensive, especially for large yards.
  • Installation: Requires professional installation for optimal effectiveness.
  • Injury Risk: Similar to the fence crown, dogs can still get injured on the fence itself.

Invisible Fencing

Invisible or electric fencing uses a buried wire and a collar that delivers a shock when the dog approaches the boundary.

Cons:

  • Safety: Delivers a shock, which can be harmful and inhumane.
  • Effectiveness: Determined dogs may still run through the boundary despite the shock.
  • Training Required: Requires extensive training to be effective.

Conclusion

While there are several options available, Pet Playgrounds Non-Electric Dog Fence stands out as the best choice. It offers a safe, humane, and effective solution to keep your dog secure without breaking the bank or obstructing your view.

Next, we’ll discuss the key features to look for in a climb-resistant dog fence.

2. DIY Fence Crown

A DIY fence crown is another option for those looking to modify their existing fence. This involves adding a big plastic pipe to the top of a chain-link fence, similar to what’s seen in city parks and baseball fields.

Pros:

  • Cost-Effective: Cheaper than replacing the entire fence.
  • Simple Installation: Can be a DIY project for those handy with tools.

Cons:

  • Injury Risk: Dogs can still get their paws or legs stuck in the chain-link, leading to potential injuries.
  • Effectiveness: May not be as effective as other solutions, especially for determined climbers.

3. Coyote Rollers

Coyote rollers are horizontal bars that spin when a dog tries to climb over the fence. They are designed to prevent both dogs and coyotes from getting a grip on the top of the fence.

Pros:

  • Effective for Some Dogs: Works well for dogs that rely on gripping the top of the fence to climb over.

Cons:

  • Cost: Can be expensive, especially for large yards.
  • Installation: Requires professional installation for optimal effectiveness.
  • Injury Risk: Similar to the fence crown, dogs can still get injured on the fence itself.

4. Invisible Fencing

Invisible or electric fencing uses a buried wire and a collar that delivers a shock when the dog approaches the boundary.

Pros:

  • Aesthetic: No physical fence to obstruct the view.

Key Features to Look for in a Climb Resistant Dog Fence

When choosing a climb resistant dog fence, look for these key features to ensure effectiveness and durability.

Durability

Your fence should withstand the test of time and your dog’s persistence. Look for materials like galvanized wire and rubber-coated welded steel wire. These materials resist rust and corrosion, ensuring the fence remains strong in all weather conditions. Our MAX Strength kits can withstand up to 3,000 psi, making them perfect for even the most determined dogs.

Height Extension

A taller fence is harder to climb. Aim for a fence at least 6 feet high. For extra security, consider extensions like our Houdini System or Straight Arm System. These can add up to 3 feet to your existing fence, making it nearly impossible for your dog to jump over.

Material Quality

Quality materials make all the difference. Our fences use 1,100-pound break strength Polypropylene Mesh infused with Bitter Pro anti-chew. This mesh is flexible, strong, and deters chewing. Steel tension cables add extra strength and stability. High-quality materials mean fewer repairs and longer-lasting security.

Ease of Installation

Nobody wants a complicated setup. Our NO-DIG sleeves make installation easy without the need for post hole diggers or cement. Most of our customers can install up to 150 feet of fencing in a day. This user-friendly approach saves you time and effort.

Compatibility with Existing Fences

If you already have a fence, you don’t need to start from scratch. Our solutions work with wood, chain link, metal, brick, block, and almost any other type of fence. This compatibility makes it easy to upgrade your existing setup without a full replacement.

By focusing on these key features, you can ensure your climb-resistant dog fence is effective, durable, and easy to install. Next, we’ll walk you through the installation process step-by-step.

Installation Tips for a Climb Resistant Dog Fence

Preparation

Before starting, assess your yard. Walk around and identify the best path for your fence. Look for obstacles like trees or rocks and plan how to work around them. Measure the total length needed using a tape measure. Curved or angled lines can work just as well as straight ones.

Tools Needed

Here’s a list of essential tools for installing your climb resistant dog fence:

  • Post Driver: To drive the fence posts into the ground.
  • Wire Cutters: For cutting the fencing material to the required length.
  • Tensioning Tools: To ensure the wire is tight and secure.
  • Magnetic Level: To make sure your posts are straight.
  • Hog Ringer Tool with D-Rings: For attaching the fencing material to the posts.
  • Cam Locks (Gripples): To secure the wire tightly.
  • Ground Stakes: To hold the bottom of the fence in place.
  • Threaded Eye Loops and Galvanized Nails: For additional securing points.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Mark Post Locations: Use spray paint or flags to mark where each post will go, typically every 15 feet.
  2. Drive Posts: Use the post driver to insert the posts into the ground. Ensure they are straight using the magnetic level.
  3. Install No-Dig Sleeves: If your kit includes no-dig sleeves, place them over the posts for added stability.
  4. Unroll the Fencing: Lay out the fencing material along the posts. Make sure it’s straight and free of tangles.
  5. Attach to Posts: Use the hog ringer tool and D-rings to attach the wire to the posts. Start from one end and work your way to the other, ensuring the wire is tight and secure.
  6. Tension the Wire: Use the tensioning tools to pull the wire tight. Secure it with cam locks to maintain tension.
  7. Anchor the Wire: Use ground stakes to secure the bottom of the fence to the ground. This prevents dogs from digging under it.
  8. Reinforce Corners: Install corner post brace kits to ensure the corners are strong and stable.
  9. Final Adjustments: Walk along the fence to check for any loose sections. Tighten and secure as needed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the Assessment: Not planning the fence path properly can lead to unexpected obstacles.
  • Incorrect Post Spacing: Posts too far apart can make the fence unstable.
  • Poor Tensioning: Loose wire can be easily climbed or pushed aside.
  • Ignoring Ground Anchors: Not securing the bottom of the fence can allow dogs to dig under.
  • Rushing the Process: Take your time to ensure everything is straight and secure.

By following these steps and avoiding common mistakes, you can create a secure and durable climb resistant dog fence that will keep your furry friend safe.

Next, we’ll explore alternatives to climb-resistant dog fences and why they may fall short.

Alternatives to Climb Resistant Dog Fences and Why They Fall Short

When it comes to securing your yard for your dog, there are several alternatives to a climb resistant dog fence. Here’s why they may not be the best choice for keeping your furry friend safe.

Electric Fences

Electric fences use an underground wire and a collar to deliver a mild shock when the dog crosses the boundary.

Drawbacks:

  • Safety Concerns: Electric fences can cause physical and psychological harm to your dog. The shock can be painful and frightening.
  • Effectiveness: Determined dogs may still run through the barrier, enduring the shock to escape.
  • No Physical Barrier: They don’t prevent other animals from entering your yard, which can be a safety risk.

Privacy Fences

Privacy fences are typically made of wood or vinyl and provide a solid barrier.

Drawbacks:

  • Cost: High-quality privacy fences can be expensive to install and maintain.
  • Climbing Risk: Dogs can still jump or kick off the horizontal supports to climb over.
  • Maintenance: Wood fences require regular upkeep to prevent rot and damage.

Coyote Rollers

Coyote rollers are bars that spin when a dog tries to climb over the fence, preventing them from getting a grip.

Drawbacks:

  • Installation Complexity: Installing coyote rollers can be labor-intensive and costly.
  • Limited Effectiveness: Agile dogs might still find ways to bypass the rollers, especially if there are objects nearby to assist their climb.
  • Aesthetic Impact: Rollers can be visually unappealing and may detract from the look of your yard.

Invisible Fencing

Invisible fencing uses a buried wire and a collar to create an invisible boundary.

Drawbacks:

  • Effectiveness: Similar to electric fences, invisible fences don’t provide a physical barrier, allowing other animals to enter.
  • Training Required: Dogs need to be trained to understand the boundary, which can be time-consuming and not always effective.
  • Behavioral Issues: Some dogs may become anxious or aggressive due to the shocks.

Comparing Costs, Safety, and Effectiveness

Fence Type Cost Safety Effectiveness
Electric Fences Moderate Can cause harm, no barrier Dogs may endure shock to escape
Privacy Fences High Safe but climbable Requires maintenance
Coyote Rollers High Safe but complex installation Limited by dog agility
Invisible Fencing Moderate Can cause harm, no barrier Requires training, not foolproof

Each of these alternatives has significant drawbacks in terms of cost, safety, and effectiveness. In comparison, our non-electric dog fences offer a humane, effective, and affordable solution without compromising the aesthetics of your yard.

Next, we’ll address some common questions about climb resistant dog fences to help you make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions about Climb Resistant Dog Fences

How high should a climb resistant dog fence be?

For most dogs, a fence height of 5 to 6 feet is usually sufficient to prevent climbing. However, if you have an especially athletic or determined dog, you might consider adding height extensions, like Pet Playgrounds’ 3-foot straight height extension. This can make your fence up to 9 feet tall, providing an extra layer of security against both climbing dogs and even deer.

Can a climb resistant dog fence also prevent digging?

Absolutely. Many climb resistant dog fences, like those offered by Pet Playgrounds, come with digging prevention solutions. These include no-dig fence barriers and base reinforcements that create a physical barrier to deter even the most determined diggers. This ensures that your dog can’t escape by going under the fence, offering comprehensive escape prevention.

Are climb resistant dog fences suitable for all dog breeds?

Yes, climb resistant dog fences are versatile and effective for all dog breeds. Whether you have a small breed that can squeeze through gaps or a large, powerful breed that can push through or climb over traditional fences, these fences are designed to handle it all. Pet Playgrounds’ non-electric dog fences use a combination of durable materials and innovative design to keep dogs of all sizes and temperaments safely contained.

Pet Playgrounds fencing system is genius! They “think like a dog” and have covered every escape angle a dog can try. Can’t climb out, can’t jump out, can’t rip the fence, can’t dig out. Our fence goes up and down hill and over rock walls. Still safely containing our dogs after almost 10 years.

We have two smart dogs that take advantage of anything to escape. Climbing on stuff we put near the edges, climbing the fence itself when that wouldn’t work, chewing through it even if it would give them splinters, and more. This way we don’t have to resort to shock collars or worry about repainting a fence when the paint chips.

This fencing works perfectly for my new Doggie Day Care! I am so glad I found this Company. the 7 foot triple fencing fits my Day Care application better than chain link fence and at more than less than half the cost of 6 foot chain link . The installation was very professional and fast.

Hi, We have had pet playground for over a year for our 2 Goldendoodles from the same litter. They are a year and a half now. Pet playground has kept them safe and secure. Victor is stupendous for support, advice, knowledge and helping with ordering.

We had a Pet Playground Fence installed about a year ago and we could not be happier. We had just adopted a new golden retriever puppy and wanted to be certain he couldn’t leave the yard for his safety. We have deer and foxes in the area.

I have had Pet Playgrounds installed at my house for 5 years now and it has held up wonderfully! I have had many friends and family comment on how nicely it blends into the background so you hardly know it is there. The ease of install as.

We absolutely love our Pet Playground Dog Fence! I really feel our dog Mazie is such a great dog greatly due to her big safe back yard. We live near the CT river and have a lot of coyote traffic. I have personally seen my dog and the coyotes run back and forth along the fence. I can remember one time the coyote tried to jump the fence but since there is not top rail and the fence has flexibility he failed.

I bought my fence in 2016 because I have a dog that is a master explorer. I love him so much but was so worried/ scared every time he went on an adventure. I bought 700 linear feet of pet playgrounds fence and have never been happier!

A stellar product, that is extremely affordable. We’ve had them come and install 2 fenced in areas on our property, and their installation services are top notch.

Ordered this kit to build a fence for our dogs. Expected it to be a lot of work as with any do it yourself project. The instruction video and manual don’t tell you how impossible it is to get holes in the gate poles to attach the corners.

Installed this dog fence a couple years ago myself ,it was easy to install and it was more affordable than everything else I found .The icing on the cake was that it was incredibly hard to see my wife didn’t even know there was a fence
