Types of Dog Fences

Choosing the right dog fence is crucial for your pet’s safety and your peace of mind. Here are some common types of dog fences to consider:

Chain Link Fences

Chain link fences are a popular choice due to their affordability and durability. They are made from interwoven steel wires and are available in various heights, typically ranging from three to 12 feet.

Pros:
Affordable: Generally cheaper than other fencing options.
Durable: Can withstand harsh weather conditions.

Cons:
Climbable: Dogs can use the fence like a ladder to escape.
Aesthetic: Not the most visually appealing option.

Vinyl Panel Fences

Vinyl panel fences are a great alternative to wood and metal fences. They are less prone to damage and require minimal maintenance.

Pros:
Low Maintenance: Doesn’t require painting or sealing.
Durable: Resistant to pests and rot.

Cons:
Cost: More expensive than chain link fences.
Installation: Requires professional installation for best results.

Wood Fences

Wood fences offer a classic look and can be customized to fit your yard’s aesthetic. However, they require regular maintenance to stay in good condition.

Pros:
Customizable: Can be painted or stained to match your home.
Privacy: Provides a solid barrier that blocks the view.

Cons:
Maintenance: Needs regular upkeep to prevent rot and pest damage.
Cost: Can be expensive, especially for taller fences.

Metal Iron Fences

Metal iron fences provide a sleek and elegant look while offering high durability. They are a good option for homeowners looking for a long-lasting solution.

Pros:
Durable: Resistant to weather and physical damage.
Aesthetic: Adds a sophisticated look to your property.

Cons:
Cost: One of the more expensive fencing options.
View: Does not obstruct the view, which may not be ideal for all pets.

Electric Fences

Electric fences, including invisible and wireless options, are a modern solution that eliminates the need for a physical barrier. They use a transmitter and receiver collar to create a boundary for your pet.

Pros:
Invisible: No physical structure, which can be a plus for aesthetics.
Flexible: Can cover large areas without the need for extensive materials.

Cons:
Training: Requires proper training to ensure pet safety.
Painful: May cause discomfort to your pet if they cross the boundary.

Picket Fences

Picket fences are often chosen for their charming appearance. They are usually made from wood or vinyl and are not very tall.

Pros:
Aesthetic: Adds curb appeal to your home.
Cost: Generally affordable.

Cons:
Containment: May not be effective for larger or more agile dogs.
Maintenance: Wooden picket fences require regular upkeep.

Brick or Stone Fences

Brick or stone fences are the most robust and secure option. They prevent digging and are nearly impossible for pets to climb.

Pros:
Security: Highly effective at containing pets and keeping intruders out.
Durability: Can last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Cons:
Cost: One of the most expensive fencing options.
Installation: Requires professional installation.

Cost of Dog Fence Installation

When considering a dog fence installation, understanding the costs involved is crucial. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

Average Cost

The cost to install a pet fence ranges from $1,500 to $8,000 on average. This wide range depends on several factors, including the type of fence material, the size of your yard, and your geographical location.

Material Cost

Different materials come with different price tags:

  • Wood Privacy Fence: A 150 linear feet wood fence can cost between $1,000 to $4,500.
  • Aluminum Fence: The same length in aluminum ranges from $4,500 to $6,000.
  • Invisible Fence: Costs for invisible fences vary:
  • In-ground Invisible Fence: Averages $1,325 for installation.
  • GPS Invisible Fence: $100 to $800.
  • Wireless Invisible Fence: $100 to $500.

Each material has its own pros and cons, affecting not just the price but also the longevity and maintenance required.

Geographical Location

Your location plays a significant role in the overall cost. States with higher demand and a higher cost of living will naturally have higher prices for materials and labor. For instance, installing a fence in Boston might be more expensive than in a rural area due to these factors.

Labor Cost

Hiring a professional to install your dog fence is another cost to consider. Labor costs can range from $800 to $1,200. Some professionals charge by the hour, with rates averaging $48 per hour. Depending on the complexity of the installation, it can take 10 to 16 hours to complete.

Additional Factors

Other factors that can impact the cost include:

  • Fence Length: Longer fences require more materials and labor.
  • Ground Conditions: Rocky or uneven terrain can increase installation difficulty and cost.
  • Power Supply for Electric Fences: Solar-powered options may have higher upfront costs but can save money over time.
  • Additional Features: Gates, corner posts, and other custom features can add to the overall expense.

Understanding these costs can help you make an informed decision when searching for a reliable dog fence installer.

DIY vs. Professional Installation

When it comes to installing a dog fence, you have two main options: DIY installation or hiring a professional. Each has its own set of pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your skills, budget, and time.

DIY Installation

Advantages:

  1. Cost Savings: Doing it yourself can save you money on labor costs.
  2. Flexibility: You can work on your schedule and make adjustments as needed.
  3. Satisfaction: There’s a certain sense of accomplishment in completing a project yourself.

Challenges:

  1. Tools Required: You’ll need specific tools like post-hole diggers, trenchers, and wire tensioners. Renting these tools can add to your overall cost.
  2. Skill Level: DIY installation can be complex, especially for wired invisible fences that require digging trenches and connecting wires to a transmitter.
  3. Permits: Depending on your location, you may need a permit to install a fence. This can involve additional paperwork and fees.

Certain types of fences, like wireless invisible and GPS fences, are easier to install and could be a good DIY option. However, traditional fences or wired invisible fences often require more expertise and effort.

Professional Installation

Advantages:

  1. Expertise: Professionals have the experience and skills to install the fence correctly and efficiently.
  2. Time-Saving: A professional can complete the installation faster, freeing up your time for other tasks.
  3. Compliance: Professionals are familiar with local building codes and regulations, ensuring your fence is installed legally.

Challenges:

  1. Cost: Hiring a professional can be more expensive due to labor charges. For example, installation services can cost between $6-7 per foot and $175 per gate.
  2. Scheduling: You’ll need to coordinate with the installer’s schedule, which might not always align with yours.

Tools Required for Installation

For traditional fence installation, you’ll need:

  • Post-hole diggers
  • Trenchers
  • Wire tensioners
  • Concrete (for setting posts)
  • Leveling tools

For invisible fences, the list includes:

  • Transmitter and receiver
  • Wires (for wired options)
  • Spade or trenching tool

Permits

Permits are another factor to consider. Depending on your location, you may need a permit to install a fence. This can involve:

  • Application fees
  • Inspections
  • Compliance with local zoning laws

Hiring a professional can simplify this process, as they are usually familiar with the permit requirements in your area.

In summary, whether you choose DIY or professional installation depends on your specific needs and circumstances. If you’re confident in your skills and want to save money, DIY might be the way to go. If you prefer a hassle-free experience and want the job done right, hiring a professional is a safer bet.

How to Choose the Right Dog Fence Installer Near You

Finding a reliable dog fence installer near you can make all the difference in ensuring your pet’s safety and your peace of mind. Here’s how to choose the right professional for the job:

Local Reviews

Start by checking local reviews. Websites like Angi offer a wealth of information from homeowners who have used these services. Reading these reviews can give you insights into the quality of work, customer service, and reliability of the installers.

Verified Reviews

Verified reviews are crucial. They ensure that the feedback is genuine and based on real experiences. This helps you make an informed choice based on the experiences of others in your area.

Consultation Questions

When you shortlist potential installers, set up consultations to ask them key questions. Here are a few to consider:

  • What size pet do you have? Some fence types, like chain link, are too short to contain large dogs.
  • Is digging an issue? Some fences, like brick or stone, help minimize digging at the fence line, where wood fences aren’t as adequate.
  • Do you need to block your pet’s view of the neighbor’s yard? Some fences, like metal iron fencing and chain link, don’t offer an obstructed view.
  • What is the cost estimate? Make sure to get a detailed quote that includes materials, labor, and any additional fees.
  • How long will the installation take? This can vary depending on the yard size and type of fence.
  • Do you need a permit? Professional installers usually handle this, but it’s good to confirm.

Angi Rating

The Angi rating is a valuable resource. It aggregates verified reviews and ratings, helping you choose a pro with a proven track record.

By following these steps, you can find a reliable dog fence installer near you who will provide a safe and secure environment for your furry friend.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dog Fence Installation

What is the cheapest fencing option for dogs?

PVC deer block netting, metal wire fences, poultry netting, and wood pallet fences are some of the most affordable options for dog fencing.

  • PVC deer block netting: This is a lightweight and inexpensive option. It’s easy to install but might not be the most durable for larger or more determined dogs.
  • Metal wire fences: These are more robust and can be a good balance between cost and durability.
  • Poultry netting: Also known as chicken wire, this is a very cost-effective option but may not be suitable for larger dogs.
  • Wood pallet fences: If you have access to free or cheap pallets, this can be a very budget-friendly and eco-friendly option.

What is the average cost of an underground dog fence?

The average cost of installing an underground dog fence ranges from $800 to $2,800.

  • Linear foot cost: The price typically falls between $2 to $7 per linear foot, depending on the type of fence and the complexity of the installation.
  • GPS fence: These use satellite data to create the boundary and can range from $100 to $800.
  • Wireless fence: These rely on radio signals and cost between $100 and $500, depending on the brand and range.

How long does it take to install a dog fence?

The installation time for a dog fence varies based on several factors:

  • Yard size: Larger yards will naturally take more time to fence.
  • Type of fence: Traditional fences like wood or metal can take several days to install, while wireless or GPS fences can be set up in a few hours.
  • Training time: For electric fences, you’ll also need to factor in the time to train your dog to understand the boundaries. This can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Whether you’re opting for a DIY project or hiring a professional, consider these factors to get an accurate estimate of the time required.

Pet Playgrounds fencing system is genius! They “think like a dog” and have covered every escape angle a dog can try. Can’t climb out, can’t jump out, can’t rip the fence, can’t dig out. Our fence goes up and down hill and over rock walls. Still safely containing our dogs after almost 10 years.

Overall very happy with this fence as an investment. I ordered a 5 foot tall, 600 linear feet fence kit for my large yard. It doesn’t obstruct our creek-view at all, so we love that! We were able to use two trees in the yard as posts (see photos).

We compared Pet Playground fences to other options. A local fence contractor wanted a bit more than twice as much $ compared to Pet Playground, and it was for just a 4-foot fence. We purchased 300 feet of 6 foot fencing, including 2 gates and installation of the whole thing.

My Pet Playgrounds fence is amazing! I have a dog that chews and my second dog is 125 pounds. This is the only fence that can hold them. We have two smart dogs that take advantage of anything to escape. Climbing on stuff we put near the edges, climbing the fence itself when that wouldn’t work, chewing through it even if it would give them splinters, and more.
